Miriam and her Sisters
With Pharaoh behind them, the Children of Israel stepped into the Sea of Reeds, trusting in Moses and G-d. The sea split into twelve parts, and each tribe entered their own lane. As the Egyptian army swarmed after them, the sea came crashing down, and with it, the slavery and subjugation of the Jewish People.
As the men, led by Moses, burst forth in the song, “Az Yashir,” Miriam led the women with singing and clapping. She had prepared timbrels and tambourines in advance of the redemption, and the women eagerly played them, in celebration of their miraculous victory over Egypt.
One can feel the joy and exultation expressed in this beautiful watercolor. The captured jubilation of the elated women, surrounded by lustrous walls of water, the sound of drums, and voices being raised.
